Campus notes

Photonics workshop: A photonics workshop organised by the International School of Photonics and Centre for Lasers and Optoelectronics was held on the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) campus here on Wednesday. Vice-Chancellor of Cusat Gangan Prathap inaugurated the programme. He pointed out that only 3 per cent fund was earmarked in the country’s budget for research and development. The Vice-Chancellor said that there should be a change in the trend where too much importance was given to the ‘applications’ part in research. V.P.N. Nampoori, Director of International School of Photonics, presided. G.P. Agarwal, faculty of Rochester University in the U.S., released ‘Photonics News’ on the occasion.

Technical festival: ‘Nirmaan 08,’ a technical festival organised by the Civil Engineering Students Association, will be held at Cusat on Friday.

A release issued by the organisers said that Mons Joseph, Minister for Public Works, will inaugurate the event. The Cusat Vice-Chancellor will preside. A.M. Yousuf, MLA, will release ‘Mezzanine.’ The programme will be held at 10.30 a.m. at SMS auditorium.
